Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the right to question specific rulings from the official, mirroring the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
