He has performed deeds countless times more severe β the present calculation of deaths due to his slashing to international aid is 600,000 and rising, and this week research projected his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted β really, no former commander would have conceived β independently wrecking large sections of the White House to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom conduct transactions with the government.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' to 'the humble will perish to cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us β among senior generations a near majority β who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of hate who endorses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and given that the quickly increasing segment among Americans might have little sense of him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. The evident and direct truth that the Savior from scripture calls for a kind of profound affection concentrated on the poor has perpetually caused Christian religion something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the populace, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down β The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Best Among Us
