Just as bad weather tore through the northern region the previous evening, the home side swept United aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 win for the City coach's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they strengthened their standing at the league summit.

Successive Setbacks for United

This scoreline signalled consecutive Women's Super League losses for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since last May, placing them seven points off the table toppers with their title hopes in serious doubt.

The Red Devils' ability to juggle league and European football with a limited roster has been a hotly discussed issue since they qualified for the Champions League. Considering the fixture list, it always seemed this was the period that would seriously challenge this capability. Regrettably for the opposition, they appeared tired throughout, the historic win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.

Lineup Adjustments

Commanding Opening Period

The home side, in contrast, could have added to their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the winning team. Having failed to beat any side who placed above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against the Gunners and United to position them in a favorable standing after the opening fixtures.
