Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these treatments should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," described an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
